October 10th, 2024 President’s Note 10/10/2024

Last week nominations for The Latrobe City People’s Choice Awards were revealed, and Traralgon Harriers was nominated in the category of Most Popular Sports Club!

These Awards acknowledge organisations that do great things in our community, and we should be proud to be nominated. Committee members Ann Bomers, Marieka Reilly and Desley Gray went along to the launch and represented the club.

But now we need to get our membership and friends to actually vote, because they are decided by the public. Jump on and vote for the club (along with club supporters DFP Recruitment, Goodlife Physio and 51 Coffee who are also nominated in their categories). It takes 2 minutes.

We have a Committee Meeting tonight, with many events happening over the next 3 months, and lots of organisation happening behind the scenes. Thanks to our wonderful committee who represent the club and do a stack of work.

All members please check the Summer 2024/25 Duty Roster and the Season Run Calendar in this newsletter. Members who mark courses, younger members, newer members, those who do a lot of other jobs for the club, and those who are not regular Thursday runners, are generally excluded from the duty draw.

It’s important for the smooth organising of Thursday runs that those on duty make sure they show up, or organise someone to swap with, to cover them if they can’t attend for some reason. The onus is on you to make sure your allocated duty night is filled, so please mark your allocated date in your diary.

As we start our Summer Season this week, and Daylight Saving has kicked in, it means we no longer have to wear the club’s power-ranger vests. Make sure you give them a wash (no soap as this damages the reflective material), a good dry and store them ready for next Winter Season.

It’ll be excellent getting off the concrete footpaths and roads, and heading back to the bush trails and runs in our incredible environment. We were originally scheduled to have a night at the track, but this has been replaced with a town run, mainly due to the organisational bourdon on committee and the onus being placed on our upcoming events.

Tuesday Group will be getting back to the track with the changing to daylight savings, which is always welcomed. TTRG is such a great group of people, of varying abilities, all encouraging and supportive, and of course there are the laughs. I think many come along for the jokes more than the training. Tuesday Group is open to anyone, as is the weekend training session with Greg Semmler.

The Memorial Run is on the 20th of October, and we’re looking forward to great showing from club members and the community. Make sure you invite friends and family. This event raises awareness for the important topic of mental health and suicide prevention, with all funds raised going to Lifeline Gippsland. See the flier in this NL for details. If you’re not running and can help out with results and timing, please have a chat to me. If you are running and you can help with setting up, it would be greatly appreciated.

Boolarra (10 Nov / RD Kaye Livingstone & Molly Irvine) and King & Queen of the Mountain (1 Dec / RD Ron Verschuur) are also coming around quickly. Make sure you put the dates in you diary. These events offer members, friends, and the wider community, different opportunities, environments and surfaces to run on, and are always wonderful experiences. We’ll also be looking for volunteers on the days, but hopefully most members will also be able to run.

Club running singlets are available to purchase, with all sizes in stock. If you want one please see or message Ann Bomers. Singlets cost the club $55 each (which is the cost to non-members). Continuing the policy of supporting and giving back to members, the cost to members is $40, which is a great subsidized rate, and yet another benefit of membership.

We get so many wonderful stories in the club newsletter, and many of our members are always off doing something around the state (and indeed the world on some accounts). All members have a story, and other members love hearing about the achievements and adventures in running outside the club. Make sure you submit your stories, even if they’re just brief. It’s not just about beating your own drum; your stories are interesting, entertaining and you never know who you’ll be inspiring, so take the time to write and get your articles into the newsletter.

The club newsletter is an important communication medium, and most members use it as a place to get updates, information and share stories. Our NL editors work hard to ensure it’s engaging and informative, so don’t be shy to share. The editing team, led by Glenn Crawford, spend a lot of time and care putting the NL together, so shoot your articles, thoughts, photos, and running snippets through to [email protected]
